Even if you rent a storage unit, the time may come when you will need to sell or donate some of your extra stuff. Luckily, technology has made it easier than ever. With online portals that can value your items instantly to arranged pick up for donations, getting rid of the clutter doesn’t have to be a hassle.
While old keepsakes, paperwork or furniture are perfect things to store, keeping items like old clothing, electronics, books or collectibles are not necessarily benefiting you. Take a look around at your extra stuff — could you sell it for money? Could it be helping someone else?
If the answer to either of these questions is yes, this is the guide for you! We’ll explain where and how to sell the extra items lying around your house. If they’re not in the best condition or you’d rather them go to a good cause we’ll tell you where to donate them.
Use the table of contents below to jump to the section or read on to see all 160 places to sell or donate your items.
Sell
Donate
Unsure of where to start? Here our three quick tips for deciding what to get rid of and how to formulate your game plan for selling or donating your things.
-
Declutter Room by Room: The first step to take when planning a purge is to set aside a day for sorting. Go through each room in your house and decide what you should store and what you can live without. Set aside an area of the house where you can put things that you don’t need anymore.
-
Use the “One Year” Rule: When deciding what to keep and what to part with, ask yourself if you’ve used the item in the last year. If your answer is no, it’s likely time to get rid of it. That is, unless it has sentimental value (like old pictures or family keepsakes).
-
Sort Your Collection: Once you have a pile of things you want to eliminate, it’s time to sort even further. Decide what you can sell and what would be better to donate. Some things, like worn-in clothing or heavily used toys are better to donate. Things that are still in great condition, electronics, collectibles or jewelry are great items to sell.
Where to Sell Your Stuff
Once you’ve decided what items you think you’ll be able to sell, you’ll need to decide where you’re going to sell them. Larger items might be better to sell locally because they are expensive to ship. You can use several apps or online marketplaces to meet up with people in your area who might want to buy your stuff (more on that below).
If the items are niche and tiny enough to send, you can use several online sources to sell. We’ve created a huge list below!
Sell Any Items
There are several websites and apps that can help you sell your unwanted items. To list on these websites you will often need to take a clear, descriptive picture of the thing you want to sell. You will then need to write an honest, accurate description and set a price before listing.
This section will focus on the outlets that allow for all sorts of items to be sold.
-
eBay: Most people have heard of eBay, the website that allows you to auction or sell new and used items online. eBay connects you to thousands of users around the world who may want to buy your stuff, no matter how odd. Just create an account, price and list your item!

-
Facebook Marketplace: Facebook has a feature that allows you to sell items by location. It’s basically Facebook’s own classified ads service. You can find the Facebook marketplace next to your Groups in Facebook, post an item and see if anyone in your area wants to buy.
